The Dismemberment — free online sample chopper

The Dismemberment is a free, browser-based sample chopper. Offer any audio file and it is cut into playable pads — chop, pitch, reverse and record your own loops, then export them as WAV. Everything runs on your own machine: nothing is uploaded, and your audio never leaves your browser.

What it does

The Dismemberment turns any sample into an instrument. Load a drum break, a vocal, a record loop or a field recording (up to 90 seconds) and it is automatically sliced into evenly spaced pads. Trigger each pad with your mouse or keyboard, pitch it up or down, reverse it, and record your performance into a new loop. Export individual slices or bounce the whole loop to a WAV file — all processed locally with the Web Audio API.

How to use it

  1. Drop an audio file onto the pad grid (WAV, AIFF or MP3, up to 90 seconds).
  2. The sample is sliced automatically across the pads — set how many slices you want.
  3. Play the pads with your mouse or the mapped keyboard keys.
  4. Pitch, reverse or re-slice any pad to taste.
  5. Hit record to capture a loop, then download your slices or loop as WAV.

Yes. Every rite on MEME PLUGINS is free to use. Using the tool is free; downloading your finished slices asks for an email once.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge — with nothing to download or install.

Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. Your file is read and processed entirely inside your browser using the Web Audio API. It is never sent to a server, so it cannot be stored, shared or seen by anyone else.

What files can I load?

Mono or stereo WAV, AIFF or MP3, up to 90 seconds long.

Can I use the samples in my own music?

Yes — anything you chop and export is yours to use, as long as you have the rights to the source audio you load.
